I first heard of this book through a Barnes and Noble e-mail advertisement that included Norah Jones’ new album, Not Too Late, and Sidney Portier’s Measure of a Man. It had all the makings of a book for Benson- love, music, and life.
The subheading, “life and loss one song at a time”, and the summary on the back of the cover, gives a good idea of what to expect in the book. (Actually, it tells you what the plot of the book is.) Even with this, I was still compelled to buy it. I love life stories, especially those that involve music. I was able to finish the book today and can say that I have no regrets with the purchase.
Rob Sheffield shares his story about the woman he falls in love with and whom changes his world- in life and in death. Love is a Mixtape is the third book I’ve read (after The World is Flat and Love Made of Heart) that contain items and events that have been a part of my life, such as music, people, places, and world events. Sinatra, Sir Mix-a-Lot, U2, Avril Lavigne, R.E.M., Nirvana, JFK & Jackie… This gave me a feeling of nostalgia that made the experiences of Rob and Renee more relatable. You fall in love with them; your heart breaks for Rob and for everyone when Renee dies; you hope that Rob finds happiness again; and you see yourself in him every step of the way. Before love. In love. In pain. Lost. Trying to move forward.
It’s not easy. Nothing is easy. Writing the book wasn’t easy. I wish I could describe the book for you; take you through his life. But I want you to experience it for yourself because it will be different for you and everyone else that reads it. It’s a fantastic book that will have you thinking about life and appreciating it just a little more.
